Carbohydrate Counting for Insulin Users
Who should attend?
Any person with diabetes taking insulin; support persons are welcome

Is a referral from my physician required?
Yes. PacifiCare, HealthNet, Medicare and some commercial insurances require a referral from your physician.

When are classes offered?
Please call Diabetes Education Department at 831-458-5881 for class schedule.

What will be learned in class?
Balanced Eating Plan:

  • You will learn how food affects blood sugar levels and how to make better food choices.
  • You will learn to identify carbohydrates and balance your intake throughout the day.
  • You will learn to use food labels and other reference materials to help you design realistic meal plans.

    Coordinating Insulin, food, and exercise:
  • You will learn to match the amount and types of food you eat with your insulin dose to reach your target blood sugar levels.
  • You will learn how to adjust the timing of insulin you take and food you eat for your exercise plan.

    Pattern Management:
  • You will learn what your blood sugar level should be before and after meals, and why it is important to keep a record of your blood sugars.
  • You will learn how to use blood sugar testing to make better diet and lifestyle choices.
  • You will learn how to adjust for changes in your normal routine, such as increasing exercise, sick days, travel, etc...

    Goal Setting:
  • You will learn how to manage your diabetes and prevent complications by setting realistic goals.
  • You will learn how managing your weight will help you manage your blood sugars.

    Diabetes Survival Class
    Who should attend?
    Newly diagnosed patients with diabetes or anyone needing a refresher; support persons are welcome.

    Is a referral from my physician required?
    Yes. PacifiCare, HealthNet, Medicare and some commercial insurances require a referral from your physician.

    When are classes offered?
    This 4-week series, 90 minutes each session, is offered each month on Tuesdays, 3:30 - 5:00 pm
    What will be learned in class? Basic Skills, including:

    Blood Glucose Self-Monitoring and Pattern Management

  • How to use your blood glucose meter accurately.
  • Target blood sugar levels before and after meals, and why it is important to keep a record of your blood sugars.
  • How to use blood sugar testing to make better diet and lifestyle choices.
  • How to adjust for changes in your normal routine, such as increasing exercise, sick days, travel, etc...

  • How to take care of your feet and when to schedule tests recommended by your health care team for your eyes, kidneys, and heart.

  • How to manage your diabetes and prevent complications by setting realistic goals.

    Getting to the Heart of Diabetes
    Who should attend?
    Patients who have both Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease; Support persons are welcome.

    Is a referral from my physician required?
    Yes. PacifiCare, HealthNet, Medicare and some commercial insurances require a referral from your physician.

    When are classes offered?
    3 session series, 2nd Thursday of the month: 3:30- 5:00 pm

    What will be learned in these classes?
    Heart Smarts
    In this class you will learn about:

  • Common types of cardiovascular disease
  • How diabetes increases your risk for heart disease
  • Warning signs
  • How to estimate your risk

    Know Your Numbers
    In this class you will learn about:
  • Links between cholesterol and diabetes
  • Goals for cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Heart healthy lifestyle changes
  • Medications to decrease risks

    Lighthearted and Lively
    In this class you will learn about:
  • Links between blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease
  • Blood pressure goals
  • Activity for weight management
  • Medications and monitoring

    This class is intended for anyone with pre-diabetes, impaired fasting glucose, insulin
    resistance, PCOS, a strong family history of diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes.
    Open to the entire community; no referral needed. Pre-registration is required.

    Succeeding with Insulin
    Who should attend?
    Any person with diabetes taking insulin; Support persons are welcome.

    This 4-week series, Wednesdays: 3:30- 5:00 pm

    What will be learned in class?
    Pattern Management:

  • You will learn what your blood sugar level should be before and after meals, and why it is important to keep a record of your blood sugars.
  • You will learn how to use blood sugar testing to make better diet and lifestyle choices.
  • You will learn how to calculate and check insulin sensitivity (correction) ratios.
    Coordinating Insulin, Food, and Exercise:
  • You will learn to match the amount and types of food you eat with your insulin dose to reach your target blood sugar levels.
  • You will learn how to adjust for changes in your normal routine, such as increasing exercise, sick days, travel, etc...
    Goal Setting:
  • You will learn how to manage your diabetes and prevent complications by setting realistic goals.
  • You will learn how managing your weight will help you manage your blood sugars.
